A new eco build Paragraph 80 luxury dwelling by Morgan Carn Architects, is located on a former quarry site. The build concept was inspired by its previous use of the land with the design emulating the sharp angles of the bricks and the glass shards that were deposited on the old site during the backfill of the quarry with modern structural glazing.
IQ Glass worked alongside the architect and homeowner to develop a unique, awe-inspiring, and energy efficient family home constructed with ‘shards’ of gravity defying modern structural glazing throughout.
Frameless structural glass shards created a focal point in the rooms including the gym and snug.
Triple glazed ultra slim framed sliding glass doors wrap around the Paragraph 80 newbuild creating permeable glass facades for seamless transitions to the beautifully manicured patio and garden space.
There is no trade-off on performance with the modern, slim profile architectural glazing to this luxury eco new build.
A gravity-defying Invisio frameless effect oversized structural glass shard is the ‘piece de resistance’ positioned on the first floor within the heart of the kitchen and living space. Reaching 4m high and weighing approximately 400kg, this oversized and overhanging frameless structural glass in a unique shape was precision engineered by our inhouse technical team of engineers to absorb the weight load within the structural front façade with bespoke steel fixing channels to hold the angled glass in place, clamping to the building. Despite the sheer size of the leaning pane, the high-performance structural glazing was designed to be completely frameless with minimal glass to glass corners.
It is this unique monolithic structural glass overlooking the outdoor swimming pool (which has a quirky shard-like shape, a playful design addition), that plays a part in this luxury house being dubbed a ‘James Bond Villain-esque house’.
The monumental modern structural glass feature is positioned either side of full height frameless structural glass that meets with the full height minimal windows sliding glass doors to the ground floor. This is where the symmetry ends, as continuing shards of thermally broken high performance glass are installed throughout.
The kitchen leads out to the stairwell and reception space with double height structural glazing creating a light-filled atrium. Triple glazed slim sliding glass doors from the kitchen open out to a balcony where its occupants can enjoy dining al fresco. Frameless glass balustrades are installed to the balconies preserving views of the surrounding gardens.
A minimal windows slim framed glass pivot door to the main entrance of the ground floor matches the RAL colour of the bold and masculine black timber and anthracite stone cladding.
Corner to corner glass is achieved with IQ’s modern structural frameless Invisio glass further elevating the unique design and ingress of natural light.
Inspired by shards of glass discovered on the site, the architects cleverly use the topography of the site to create a dynamic, ground hugging eco building.
The owner of this James Bond villain house said “Very pleased with everything, however it was tough getting there! “The big structural window is a focal point of the house and it wouldn’t be quite the same without it. “The tricky bit was putting something in the window and the two sculptures fitted in perfectly and look great.”
