The double height glass link is made up of minimal windows sliding glass doors and fixed curtain walling sections that join the building together in the centre. The curtain walling sections were integrated above the sliding doors to mirror the slim framing for a consistent design.
Despite the luxury and minimal design, this home was designed in accordance with Level 4 of the Code for Sustainable Homes. It was important to specify high performing glazing systems to ensure the Yorkshire home met the sustainability requirements, reaching impressive levels of thermal and security performance.
IQ’s minimal sliding glass doors were installed around the home for access to the outdoor living spaces, chosen for their slim framing and contemporary aesthetic. These step-free sliding doors provide ideal access to the garden as well as balcony access on the upper floors. As well as access, the doors allow natural light to flow into the eco home and enhance the ventilation.
Each of these sliding glass doors was installed with a biparting configuration to increase the access space between the indoor and outdoor environments. The sliding doors have helped to create an indoor-outdoor living space by merging the terraces with the internal spaces. The kitchen diner can be merged with the external garden space where the homeowners are able to use the extended space, perfect for family gatherings and summer parties.
Frameless glass balustrades were integrated to create safety barriers internally and externally for the homeowners. Internally, these balustrades were used in the hallway on the second floor of the home where the glass link had been installed. This small hallway with open sections on either side maximises the downstairs space and allows for both levels to be naturally lit throughout the day. Using frameless glass balustrades internally, allows the natural light to flood the space with no obstructions. These balustrades were also integrated into the stairwell to create a minimal bannister.
Externally, frameless glass balustrades were integrated into the terraces to enhance the safety for the homeowners when the terrace is in use. By installing frameless balustrades, natural light can pass through into the home with no obstruction to light or views from inside. A stainless steel handrail was integrated into these balustrades for a continuous contemporary design.
A variety of window systems were used around this sustainable home, and the aluminium windows were designed with the same slim framing as the doors to create a seamless design. These windows were installed to enhance the natural light intake at the front of the home. Structural glazing was utilised here to maximise natural light, the frameless windows were installed to allow the natural light passing through the glass link to enter the corridor to the other internal living spaces.
