Thermal performance of the structural glass roof was paramount to this glazed extension in Edinburgh as the length of the oversized glass roof is 8.4m long and 2.3m wide.

The structural glass roof had a glazed return on three side with vertical glass panes to the pitched gable end. IQ’s inhouse technical team configured frameless effect structural glass beams and glass fins to support the joints.

Each of the top glass panes to this structural glass roof weighed 280kg. Our Invisio structural glazing helped achieve an almost frameless effect, offering uninterrupted sky views with maximum natural light.

Key to this glazed extension in Edinburgh City, was the high performance triple glazed slim sliding glass doors either side of the new kitchen dining space.

Floor to ceiling thermally broken triple glazed sliding glass doors maintained a slim profile of 26mm frame.

The flush threshold detail of the tracking system to the triple glazed sliding glass doors allows seamless transitions on both sides to the stone wall terrace garden. The triple glazed sliders also contribute to noise reduction, achieving a weather tight glass facade.

A fixed steel post separates the glass corner to this cantilevered Edinburgh glazed extension. In addition to the all the high specification structural glass, solar control coatings were used to combat solar gain during the warmer months.

The result is a luxurious and modern glazed extension to a tradition Georgian Edinburgh Villa that will be enjoyed for many more generations to come.
