Contemporary rear extension to central London townhouse.

This townhouse in the heart of central London expanded its useable space with the addition of a glass box extension. The contemporary rear extension was engineered using structural glazing for the most minimal, fully glazed design.  

The glass structure protrudes from where the original wall ends, wrapping around the side of the building to maximise the space and extend sideways as well as out into the garden. Complete with an oversized rooflight, the new extension allows the minimal interior design to be flooded with natural light throughout the day.

Up and over glazing was specified on one elevation of the glass structure, where a vertical glass pane meets horizontal roof glazing. This glass to glass connection uses structural silicone to achieve the frameless effect, granting uninterrupted views of the outdoor environment.  

The large frameless rooflight stretches the length of the dining area, enhancing the clean, white interior design. The abundance of natural light highlights the minimal design perfectly, creating light-filled spaces with a strong connection to the outdoor area.  

A slim framed aluminium Schuco casement door has been specified to grant garden access directly from the open plan kitchen area, in an oversized configuration to match the nearby oversized glazing panes. 

The slim aluminium casement door was specified for its uniform appearance with structural glass, creating a fully glazed design both internally and on the external face of the terraced property.  

 

Complete with a flush threshold, the casement door allows for a seamless transition from inside to out. Both the door and the structural glazing are fully thermally broken to ensure modern performance values are reached and the internal living spaces are at a comfortable temperature all year round.

The contemporary rear extension has successfully modernised the traditional terraced home, combining modern and traditional elements for a unique design.
