Opening corner slim framed sliding doors to contemporary extension in Oxfordshire

IQ’s slim framed sliding doors line two sides of this highly glazed extension in Oxfordshire, creating an opening corner configuration that foms a floating roof effect. The opening corner glass sliding doors slide effortlessly away from the corner junction leaving no corner post in their wake and creating a dynamic space with fluid movement from inside to out.

The project was a finalist in the AJ Retrofit Awards, recognised for its sustainable refurbishment. Situated within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), the expansive home combines modern and traditional elements for a completely unique design.

At the gable end, shaped frameless structural glass units mirror the minimal frames of the below opening corner glass sliding doors. Incorporating gable end windows allows a huge amount of space into the space, allowing the homeowners to enjoy the outside environment from within the home. 

Frameless structural glazing was also used on the return of the opening corner glass sliding door systems, with a glass to glass junction that is extremely minimal in design. The advantage to using slim framed and frameless systems is the subtle design, which is perfect for engineering modern extensions of this nature. 

The roof of the extension was clad with zinc, creating a contrast against the traditional tiled roof of the main house. Exposed wooden beams can be seen around each edge of the extension as well as inside the new extension, maintaining a traditional edge.

The flush threshold that is left behind when the opening corner glass sliding doors are slid open allows for seamless travel between the two environments. From the outset, the gable end glazing has been split into 3 panes to create a continuous flow with the sliding door systems below.
