A new single storey contemporary rear extension and kitchen renovation to an old turn of the Century Victorian country house in Loughborough, designed by architects, The Art of Building would be a highly anticipated sympathetic addition to the home of interior designer and owner, Katrina of KB Living.

Instrumental throughout the design phase, the owner maintained a clear vision of a cohesive design that they had planned in their minds for a long time. After a visit to IQ’s flagship showroom and seeing ultra-wide slim sliding glass doors with minimal sightlines, the decision not to go with a traditional style orangery was conclusive, opting for a single storey glazed extension.

Ultra wide slim framed sliding glass doors were chosen to envelope three sides of the south west facing single storey glazed extension.

The eight metre by five metre single storey glazed extension houses an ultra wide sliding glass three track system across the width of the largest aperture with the system spanning 8.5m wide and 2.5m tall. The other two oversized glazing systems are installed with the second ultra wide sliding glass door system reaching over 5m wide and the third just over 4m across.

The ultra wide sliding door system has an open glass corner configuration that expands the liveable space bringing in the outdoors with flush threshold detail.

Minimal sightlines of the frames and maximum natural light from the glazed extension were a key part of the client’s brief to connect the building and its occupants to nature bringing in views of the copper beech trees surrounding the Victorian property.

Another key requisite was the importance of the uninterrupted views through the sliders to continue beyond dusk in the new rear glazed extension using exterior lighting.

A double fascia overhangs the ultra wide sliding glass door system so that when it rains, the water doesn’t touch the glass preserving the views and enabling its occupants to enjoy watching the harsh elements whilst feeling cocooned by the glazed extension.

The IQ team assisted in the colour matching to the structure of the façade of the glazed extension supplying the powder coating of the double fascia to RAL colour 7006 beige grey.

The new glazed extension was set to become the heart of the home. The constant connection to the beautiful mature gardens was key. The surrounding ornamental copper beech trees to the side and the rear of the property were underlit to prevent reflections from inside the glazed extensions, allowing the owner to enjoy the views beyond dusk.

The result is an elegant and timelessly beautiful family home with close connections to its rural surroundings with the ultra wide sliding glass door system to the new glazed addition.
