A dark London terrace property is transformed into a light filled contemporary home designed by Anthro Architecture. The London double height glazed extension is installed with a minimal windows vertical sash window which stands more than 4m high and is over 2m wide creating height and increasing light within the new space. The large minimal framed vertical sash window is bonded to structural glazing with corner to corner glass on the frameless-effect Invisio structural up and over glass roof flooding both the ground and first floor with maximum natural daylight
The London double height glazed extension included a vertical sliding sash window, chosen to maximise the aperture to provide easy access to the patio. Since the width of the aperture end-to end is 2,234mm, sliding doors or bifolding doors would have impeded access significantly reducing the opening to the outside. Maximising the space with minimal vertical guillotine window, our minimal framed system houses a pulley-weight system concealed within one side of the the frame counterweighting the vertically sliding panes, resulting in a smooth and effortless manual sliding open sash window.
The period terrace property in its original state offered limited possibilities of expansion. The London double height glazed extension achieved a greater sense of light and space with over 5 metres of structural glazing spanning the ground and first floor creating a light filled mezzanine to the reconfigured living spaces on the first floor.
The ‘up and over’ structural glass roof makes the kitchen dining space feel airy and light. Glass balustrade are installed to the first floor to preserve views out fulfilling today’s architectural demand for maximum light.
All oversized glass elevations had to be lifted in via a crane since there was no access to the rear elevation of this London terrace property.
The result is a contemporary spacious glazed extension allowing closer contact to the patio and maximum natural light flooding though both floors enhancing the sense of space further still.
