The homeowners of this traditional terraced home required more space and a better flow of natural light, without altering the street view of the house. They decided to expand into their garden, adding a fully glazed double height extension and gaining an abundance of natural light.

The rear façade is constructed using structural glass and slim framed sliding doors, presenting entire walls of glass and forging a strong bond between indoor and outdoor environments. In the warmer months, the homeowners can merge the internal living space with the terraced garden area, simply by sliding the doors open. Replacing the brick wall with a glazed façade meant the home now benefits from free-flowing paths of natural light bouncing all the way through both floors.

Frameless structural glazing and sliding doors create double height rear extension

Frameless internal glass balustrades to staircase

Inside the home, structural glass has continued to be used at multiple points, to ensure the paths of natural light are not obstructed. Frameless glass balustrades are used on the staircase as well as frameless picture windows on the first floor, above the sliding doors. The slim frames of our sliding door systems allow the fixed and opening elements to present a coherent exterior design, with only subtle differences visible.

The extension features a large, walk on floorlight that allows homeowners and guests to see through the first-floor floor/ground floor ceiling. With the use of a glass floor, natural light travels through this space, creating a brightly lit, serene interior design.

For any walk-on or overhead glazing, IQ use toughened laminated glass to ensure the safety of the property and people below in the event of a breakage. This means that if a breakage occurred, the walk on floorlight would hold the pieces of glass in place.

The first-floor bedroom now has a frameless picture window wrapping around two sides of the room, with corner to corner glazing, linking the original parts of the home with the new extension. The bedroom, previously lacking in light, now benefits from a huge amount of light thanks to the use of internal glazing.

The homeowners have followed a biophilic design, with houseplants in every corner, to strengthen their connection to outside. This is strengthened further through the use of oversized glass panes, wood colour palettes, white walls and natural textures. With garden views on sight from multiple angles of the house, this is a true representation of indoor outdoor living.
