A substantial rear extension was added to this family home in Rickmansworth used large slim framed sliding glass doors to bring light and space to the open plan living areas.
The new extension added a kitchen and dining room to the large detached house with a large glass elevation of slim framed sliding glass doors as the key focal point to this contemporary extension. A three-pane sliding glass door system only has a 21mm vertical frame with a frameless finished surround.

When the doors are slid open the floor finishes are flush inside to outside, with all necessary drainage cleverly hidden in the base tracks and drainage blocks below.
This type of minimally framed sliding door helps merge the internal and external living areas when the doors are both open and closed.
A slim framed aluminium casement door offers additional access to the garden through a smaller opening.
The configuration is a simple single outward opening casement door the secondary access to the garden is useful in colder months where the temperature in the house would drop dramatically if the large elevation was opened up. The sandblasted glass offers privacy but still allows the natural light to pass through.
Four slim aluminium casement windows were used elsewhere in the renovation and contemporary extension in order to keep a cohesive design and improve the thermal efficiency and security of the home. The thin aluminium framing maximises the light entering the living spaces whilst providing smaller openings for ventilation.
All of the aluminium framings have been powder coated in a dark grey RAL 7016 contrasting effectively with the white rendered walls.
