Bespoke replacement dwelling in the South Downs

The characteristics of the vernacular to which the modern bespoke villa in the South Downs sits on in Wealden, largely consisting of clay soil on sandstone bedrock. The architects embraced these natural materials into the fabric of the building with the neutral hues of the stone and brickwork framed by oversized triple glazing and minimal framed floor to ceiling sliding glass doors to the south facing rear elevation, highlighting the grand colonnades, and framing architectural views to the mature Oakland grounds.  

A series of six slim framed sliding glass doors to the east and south elevations offer seamless transition to the outdoor space. Flush threshold detail and drainage allows seamless access between the indoors and outdoors for modern day living.  

The oversized wide sliding glass doors to the ground floor span an aperture of 4.7m across and are mirrored by oversized frameless casement windows to the first floor creating a double-height hall at the centre of the bespoke home in the South Downs.

A configuration of two panels of floor to ceiling slim framed sliding glass doors were installed to the south facing bedrooms leading to the balcony space. The fixed casement overlook a ‘living roof’ and provide breathtaking views beyond to the National Park.  

The oversized triple glazed casement windows to the first floor were engineered to withstand high wind loads.  

The north and east facing elevations to the first floor boast floor-to-ceiling tilt and turn casement windows to maximise natural light, comfort and views from hallways of this modern bespoke home in the South Downs. 

Clean energy and thermal efficiency were an important aspect of this luxury South Downs newbuild, and high-performance architectural triple glazing with thermal break technology was imperative.
