Lea Bridge Library by Studio Weave is a well-deserved winning sustainable library extension project to the grade II listed hub of the community.
The timber framed extension houses a large glass wall using a combination of structural glass with minimal windows 4+ sliding glass doors. Midway along the timber frame glass wall, the structure narrows and steps up which was a purposeful design to protect the root system of the surrounding trees on the library plot. This change in level of the building was paired with the location of a curved glass wall within the glass façade. This change in direction of glass within the timber frame masks the structural changes by drawing the eye to the curved glass wall element.
Using exposed natural timber internally allows Lea Bridge Library to merge the internal and external spaces using architectural glazing and natural materials.
BAFTA wins A RIBA London Award 2023! The expansion and re-design of the British Academy of Film & Television Arts, Grade II Listed headquarters at 195 Piccadilly includes new top floor by raising and restoring two large Victorian rooflight structures and decorative plasterwork made visible through oversized minimal framed roof glazing.
The Richard Attenborough rooms are steeped in rich history, and Benedetti Architects was keen to blend the old with the new, embracing the regal features of the original building and opening out to a terrace with minimal framed floor to ceiling sliding glass doors with flush threshold detailing for seamless access to some of the best views of St. James’s.
Why IQ Glass?
“We were looking for something minimal, robust and easy to use. A narrow frame was key to maximise the view overlooking the magnificent trees in St James’s Churchyard and IQ had the perfect product for us. I particularly like the floor track detail and the smooth and flat transition between the room and the terrace with no tracks on show. The team was helpful in coordinating the many and complicate details with us and achieving a great result.”
